Everglades Alligator Farm: alligators and air boats

Mar 2, 2010

As American alligators dwindled in numbers, the state of Florida approved alligator farming to help preserve the species. More than 2,000 alligators find refuge at Everglades Alligator Farm. Baby alligators are kept in growing pens at the farm and larger alligators roam free in the breeding ponds.

This park also has crocodiles, including the American crocodile, the Nile crocodile, the Orinoco crocodile and the Caiman. There are only about 600 known American crocodiles, so their protection is needed to ensure the continuation of the species.

While you're at the farm, you'll have a chance to hold a baby snake or alligator and have your picture taken with these lovely reptiles.

Daily alligator and snake shows occur at the park. Show times will be announced over the park's loudspeaker, or you can call before you come to plan ahead.

Zip around the swamp land on a loud but exciting air boat ride. While on the water, you'll likely spot birds, alligators, turtles and fish in their natural habitat. You may get splashed on the ride, so wear something appropriate.

Check the website for coupons and discounted admission prices. Your normal admission price includes an air boat ride and all animal shows at the park. You can choose to purchase entry to the park without an air boat ride for a cheaper price.

Animal-loving children could have a wild birthday party at the park. Fees include a private air boat ride and animal show, goodie bags, a gift for the birthday child and a reserved party area.

You can pick up alligator-themed key chains, t-shirts, coffee mugs, books, toys and even gator heads in the Alligator Farm gift shop.
