Trapeze school will have you hooked on flying!
The art of the Flying Trapeze began 150 years ago in 1859, but it's never too late to get in on the fun. The Flying Trapeze School in Bayfront Park offers a swinging time that's fairly close to the ground. You can sign up for a two-hour class, where you will get multiple turns on the trapeze, or you can pay for a Try ‘n’ Fly, where you fly once and decide if it’s for you.
Participants swing from a platform about 25- to 30-feet high, witih a rectangular safety net below. Instructors teach to the individual’s skill level. Instructors guide newcomers through the basics, taking you from the platform to the air and then back to the ground.
Don’t worry: You're held in a safety harness for the entire time!
What can you expect in your initial class? The first hour and a half, you’ll climb up the ladder to the platform and learn how to swing out, relax, hook your legs on top of the bar and hang by your knees.
Once that is mastered (or if that is mastered), then you can move on to the big time. The catch? The last half hour is dedicated to catching. One of the instructors swings on the bar across from the platform, and if your timing is correct, you’ll hook your legs and arch back to meet him. When you’re caught by the arms, your legs will slide gracefully off the bar. Back flip down, and you’re done!
If you’ve attended several classes and are comfortable, you can learn other tricks, including splits or even an air return to the platform.
The minimum age to fly the trapeze is 6, and there is no maximum age limit. Some classes are mostly kids, and some are full of adults ranging in age from 20s to 50s.
The Flying Trapeze School will get your adrenaline running and your blood pumping. Then you can have the talk: “Mom, Dad, I’m joining the circus.”
