Miami Art Museum: modern art for a modern city
The Miami Art Museum, located downtown on West Flagler next to the Main Library and the Historical Museum of South Florida, is packed with culture. Latin American and North American influences keep the museum's exhibits fresh and budding.
The Miami Art Museum was solely an exhibition space from 1984 to 1996, and it was known as the Center for Fine Arts. From 1996 to 2007, the museum acquired a permanent collection, and grew from zero to close to 500 pieces in this 11-year period. Artists featured in MAM's permanent collection include Chuck Close, Carlos Alfonzo, José Bedia, Ann Hamilton, Wilfredo Lam, Lorna Simpson, Joseph Cornell, Guillermo Kuitca and Marcel Duchamp.
Every third Thursday the museum hosts JAM at MAM from 5–8:30 p.m. Free for MAM members and $10 for non-members, the JAM is a Happy Hour filled with hors d'oeuvres, a donation bar and local DJs spinning relaxing tunes. Young professionals, artists, musicians and socialites unite and mingle at this fun and unique after-work alternative.
If you're on a budget, visit MAM on the Second Saturday of the month, when admission is free. The museum is always free to members, children under 12 years and students with a valid ID. Individual membership starts at $45 per year. If you're planning on visiting the Historical Museum also, buy a $10 ticket and see both museums in one day.
Children will enjoy creating their own masterpiece in the art room at MAM. Paper, colored pencils, markers, colored tape and other tools allow children (and adults, too) to express their artistic sides.
MAM provides lectures, films, art caravans, DJ events, percussion, poetry and more to the public. Check out the events calendar to find your favorite event.

Miami Art Museum will move to Museum Park in the projected date of 2012 where it's ever-growing collection can fit comfortably in the new 125,000-square-foot building. City officials plan for Museum Park to be built in the 29-acre Bicentennial Park by the bay in downtown Miami. Miami Science Museum also plans to join Museum Park once it's built.
