Miami Science Museum: Spend the day under the stars
Published: Jan 25, 2009
There's something for everyone at the Miami Science Museum. Children discover the science that governs our natural world; young adults meet and greet at the monthly Young Professionals mixers.
With a planetarium, theater, Wildlife Center, Discovery Room, space gallery and more, there's will be plenty of scientific stimulation for the kids. The current exhibit, Music, showcases memorabilia of musicians through the decades. With hands-on activities that explore digital sampling, harmonics, how we hear, sound patterns, from the microphone to the speaker, drum beats, green screens in music videos and more, children and adults will be sure to walk out with something more than they came in with, tappin' their feet to the sound of music.
Outside you can walk on the wild side in the Wildlife Center. Watch bald eagles, large tortoises, and an assortment of birds. Rescued birds are nursed back to health and conditioned in the bird rehabilitation room, which prepares them for life back in the wild. Inside, get down and dirty with the reptiles. See geckos, lizards and snakes, oh my!
Planetarium shows like How to Find the Stars and Planets of the Month and Worlds in Motion and Wildlife Center demos like Wildlife Encounters and Birds of Prey are free with admission. On arrival, you'll receive the day's schedule of events.
Star-lovers, take advantage of the Weintraub Observatory, open the first Friday of every month from 8-10 p.m. Admission is free!
Teens and young adults might also enjoy the first Friday of the month. A laser show and accompanying music is featured, with lasers accompanying great artists such as Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and more. Vendors sell snacks for laser lovers, including pizza, hot dogs and other treats. The laser show is $7 for adults and $4 for children.
Young professionals can attend the museum's monthly mixer. For $15, young professionals gather to meet and greet in the museum's lobby, with an open bar and live or recorded music. Dates are listed on the museum website.
