Vagabond: local tunes and a cool crowd
This might be the only nightclub in town with bouncers that will turn away attractive women trying to skip lines and tell them to wait their turns. Finally! Vagabond is a place full of genuinely nice people that understand what it means to wait in line.
Vagabond is a place for music and art. With the lounge area filled with the work of featured local artists and your ears filled with terrific local tunes, you may never want to leave.
The cover charge is normally $5 to $10, with free entry if you're early enough. Also, ladies sometimes get in free.
Before midnight, enjoy $1 beer (usually limited to certain kinds).
On Stone Groove nights (Tuesdays, usually) you'll hear open mic soul, jazz, blues and spoken word. Doors open at 10 p.m. for sign-up. Check out other happenings at Vagabond.
Inside Vagabond, you'll find two rooms playing music you can dance to. The larger room gets a little smoky, but that shouldn't ruin your fun. If you need some fresh air, hop out to the outdoor patio.
Outside there's a fire pit, more music (maybe hip hop tunes), and friendly Vagabond employees serving food to balance out the booze.
Be aware that Vagabond isn't in the greatest area of town. It's wise to take a cab or park somewhere close (there are lots and meters) and walk with a group to the bar.
My first night there included a helicopter chase that sufficiently frightened me (until I had another Cuba Libre and forgot about it). Regardless, I will be back!
