Red Koi Thai & Sushi Lounge: dine, dance on the Mile
This trendy little restaurant on Miracle Mile has affordable lunch specials with generous portions. The dinner menu consists of appetizers, salads, sushi and specialty rolls, Japanese and Thai favorites, and of course, dessert.
The red staircase at the entrance leads to the upstairs lounge, a perfect place to hear some groovy tunes after dinner in the Gables. The lounge is open till 2 a.m. every Wednesday through Saturday.
Start off with the tuna tartar, edamame, Bangkok shrimp or a spring roll. Several soups and salads are available as well, such as the miso soup, Tom Yum Gai Thai soup, cucumber pasta salad, spicy Thai beef salad and the seaweed salad.
The Red Koi hand rolls are always a favorite — try the JB, California, eel, salmon skin, spicy tuna, chunky or hamachi hand roll for $4-$6.
Sushi combination platters are large enough for two to share. The sushi and sashimi on these platters are the chef's choice, but you can substitute a different type for a small fee.
The extensive menu boasts almost 30 specialty rolls and 6 signature rolls. The chef suggests the Ninja specialty roll for $12, a combination of salmon, salmon tempura, crab salad, masago, eel sauce and spicy mayo topped with crunchy tempura flakes. For a signature roll with a kick, try the $14 Wow roll, with crab, avacado and masago wrapped with salmon and topped with jalapeños and spicy mayo.
Lobster-lovers try the Lobster Curry Sensation, $27. This zesty meal combines a sautéed lobster with shrimp, scallions, onions, egg, bell pepper in yellow curry powder served with white or brown rice. The Miso Chilean Sea Bass is another patron favorite — marinated with miso sauce and served over sautéed spinach, $27.
Thai lovers try the chicken or duck sweet basil, with basil, carrots, scallions, onions, bell peppers and red koi sauce. The Masaman Curry is another popular dish, try the chicken or beef cooked with avocado, onions, cashew nuts, coconut milk and seasoned curry for $15.
