Fritz & Franz Bierhaus: a taste of Germany in the Gables
Walking up to Fritz and Franz Bierhaus in Coral Gables is like walking into a traditional German biergarten. The large wooden tables outside can fit lots of people, so grab a seat and make a new friend.
Fritz and Franz invites Miamians and visitors to their annual events. Their Oktoberfest celebration is a festival like the well-known Bavarian beer festival in Munich. The Bierhaus party lasts 7-10 days each year, at the beginning of October. Live music is leading the party outside, with an Oktoberfest atmosphere of beer, friends and fun. Oktoberfest is free to attend, and a raffle will be held to win a cruise, with proceeds going to charity.
Oktoberfest has been rockin' the Gables since the mid-1990s. Enter the Bratwurst Eating Contest or the Jodel Contest and sample traditional German and Austrian foods.
Their annual November Bluesfest attracts quite a crowd. Check their website for more details.
Inside Bierhaus you can catch your favorite soccer or rugby match on their flat screen TVs. The decor includes televisions, posters, sturdy light-colored wooden tables, large windows and a hodge-podge of sports memorabilia. The service is friendly and informative, and the servers can interpret your menu for you if you aren't familiar with German cuisine. Come as you are to this fun-loving Bierhaus.
The Bierhaus has daily meal specials. Monday enjoy stuffed cabbage with mashed potatoes, and Tuesday is 2-for-1 schnitzel night from 5-10 p.m. Wednesday try the crisp roasted pork shank with two sides, and Thursday nibble on the Hungarian beef goulash. Friday's special is rainbow trout sauteed in lemon pepper with parsley and mixed greens. Weekend specials include Zwiebelrostbraten -- flattened ribeye steak with onion sauce and sauteed schnitzel with bacon mushroom sauce and homemade pasta. If you aren't hungry enough for a full meal, snack on a pretzel with Fritz and Franz's delicious mustard.
