House of India: spice up your life
South Florida is home to warm weather and great food. House of India Restaurant in Coral Gables knows how to serve up a delicious and inexpensive buffet. If you love Indian food, be sure to try this place. Although House of India's exterior isn't necessarily appealing, the inside is tastefully decorated with bright paintings, brass buffet platters, intricate table designs and warm lighting.
The lunch buffet is available Monday-Friday 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Prices vary by day. Monday-Wednesday you'll pay $11, Thursday $12 and Friday $13. The buffet includes mint chutney, vegetable samosas with a flavorful sauce, lentil soup, nan and chicken tandoori. Other dishes include chicken, beef, goat, lamb or vegetable cooked in exotic herbs and spices. Labels under each dish allow customers to easily identify the dish and read its ingredients. The buffet dishes are usually mild in spice.
Appetizers for dinner include vegetable or meat samosas, madras shrimp and special assorted appetizer platters, perfect for the whole table.
The dinner menu has lots of gems, including the chicken, lamb, beef, goat, shrimp, fish or lobster curries. Prices range from $13-$20, depending on what spice you choose -- they have curry, vindaloo, saag, korma, rogan josh and tikka masala.
More than 15 vegetarian dishes are available for dinner, including eggplant bharta, bhindi masala (okra), shahi vegetable curry and chana masala (chick peas, tomatoes, onions and Indian spices).
For dinner you choose whether you'd like your dish mild, medium, hot or vindaloo spiced. All entrees come with rice, and for $4 extra you can add soup, nan and rice to your meal. Order plain bread or stuffed bread to accompany your entree.
Parking can be difficult at this spot, since it's on Merrick Way, a diagonal side street in Coral Gables. You may be lucky enough to find a metered spot in front, or even a more highly cherished spot in their lot. Not many cars can fit there though.
House of India accepts dine-in and take-out orders.
