Sergio's Family Restaurant: Cuban comfort food Americans love
If you've ever driven by Sergio's on Coral Way in the morning, then you can probably tell that Sergio's is a popular spot. You might want to roll out of bed a little earlier just to catch breakfast before work. But if you're not a morning person, you're not missing out — breakfast is served all day!
El Mezclado (mays-kla-doe) is the special scrambled egg recipe. Think two eggs and ham on the grill together, served with Cuban toast and coffee ($6). Steak lovers rejoice in the Bistec a Caballo Palomilla breakfast — steak with two eggs. This hearty meal is also served with french fries, Cuban toast and coffee ($6). Sergio's grits, hash browns and omelettes should please the more traditional palate.
Sergio's menu is written in Spanish and English. Sergio's even sounds out a lot of the words for us native English speakers. Café Cubano (ka-fay cue-ba-know) is $1.10 — a delicious shot-size espresso with enough sugar to boost a football team.
You'll be ready to face anything after this tasty coffee! Order it after your meal and drink it the traditional Cuban way, or order it with your meal for a kick. Café con Leche is also a sweet option, coffee with milk for $2. You can also get your caffeine fix with American coffee, cappuccino, iced coffee, or hot tea.
As soon as you sit down, order your table assorted empanadas. Choose from chicken, beef, spinach, ham and cheese, or guava and cheese. These tasty appetizers are named from the Spanish verb empanar — to coat or wrap in bread. Order a few and share; these $2 stuffed pastries will not disappoint.
Tortillas, croquetas, hummus and mariquitas are other popular starters, each about $4. A Cuban tortilla ($6.49) isn't a flour or cornmeal affair, like the Mexican tortilla; it's a frittata-like slab made with eggs and — well, whatever you want! Most commonly the tortilla takes ham, chorizo or maduros (fried, sweet plantains).
For a tasty sandwich option try the Pan Con Bistek ($6). This monster sandwich includes thin steak, grilled onions, fresh tomatos and potato sticks on toasted Cuban bread.
The regular Cuban sandwich ($6) is pork, ham, cheese, pickles and mustard on pressed Cuban bread. Another patron favorite is the Churrasco entree, an Argentinian-cut skirt steak served with homemade chimi-churri sauce (a must-have), priced at $14. The Mahi Mahi filet for $14 will leave your mouth watering. Order it grilled or blackened.
You can get sangría, wine or imported/domestic beer for about $4. If you've got several people, consider a pitcher of sangría for $14. For dessert, try flan, ice cream, custard or pudding.
There are other locations in Kendall and on Bird Road.
