Monty's Raw Bar: a cool view and a chill crowd

Published: Apr 20, 2009

Monty's large outdoor restaurant attracts quite a gathering on most nights. The view of the Bayshore Marina is enough to keep diners happy, but the fresh seafood, live music, and festive crowd definitely doesn't hurt. Don't be surprised to find a crowd here Thursday through Saturday evenings.

Happy Hour lasts from 4–8 p.m. Monday-Friday (excluding holidays), with half-price alcohol and discounted beer. Their signature drink is the Pain Remover, served on the rocks with pineapple, orange juice, and cream of coconut juice with a blend of dark rum.  You can order Pain Removers #1, #2, or #3 (for $9, $10, and $11), which correspond to their amount of rum.  At Happy Hour, they're only $4.50-$5.50.

Happy Hour also discounts raw bar items like oysters, shrimp, and clams.  Ask your server for more details.

If you need to cool off, try a frozen drink. such as a strawberry daiquiri, rum runner, piña colada, the Miami vice or the bushwacker — but watch out for brain-freeze. You can also sip on beer, wine, and champagne while watching the sun go down.

From the raw bar, enjoy bites of shrimp, mussels, oysters, or clams, ranging from $6–$20. Monty's has soups, salads, sandwiches, and even pizzas.

Starters include nachos, conch fritters, buffalo wings, potato skins, jalapeño poppers, fried calamari, and fried chicken or fried dolphin fingers, $7–$14.

Try the Fisherman's Platter for $20. This dish is big enough for two to share, and it comes with fried calamari, shrimp, conch, dolphin fish, and french fries.

Seafood entrées are the way to go — the cracked conch, tilapia, calamari, fried clams, dolphin, and coconut shrimp are all winners, $13-$18. If fish isn't your style, try the BBQ ribs, churrasco steak, BBQ chicken, or New York Strip, $14–$24.

Homestyle sides include corn on the cob, rice and beans, steamed veggies, onion rings, garlic rolls, curly fries and French fries.

For dessert, try key lime pie for $7 or Snickers pie (like the chocolate bar) for $6.

Gratuity of 18% is already added to the bill. Other location at South Beach on Alton Road.
