Virginia Shuman Young Elementary School Reviews

The school does not offer much in social studies. English is average. Math is above average. The teachers are good. I find it hard to assess my child's actual performance because there are no grades. Also the student teacher ratio is 20 to 1 unless you are in a special class.

A fantastic school, beats any elementary school. Great teachers and a wonderful way of learning. All children should have the chance to learn as this school teaches.

VSY has a very strong determination for students to succeed. That's the good news and, in some ways, the bad news. My kindergartner has impressed me over and over, and enjoys the Montessori manipulatives. The downfall is this- pressure and anxiety overflow because of FCAT and testing- (NCLB?) This may or may not be burdening staff, but it IS effecting the kids. I have seen and heard administrators and parents discuss student anxiety and pressure- as young as 1st grade. P.E., Art, and Music cut to a minimum. Teacher/school pressure for good test scores is increasing and there is currently a need for balance.

My children have attended VSY for 8 years and it has been an excellent experience, educationally and otherwise.

VSY is an incredible school. The teachers are amazing and the parents are extremely involved. The families all have one thing in common-the education of their children takes priority. If you can get in, this school, in my opinion, is better than Pinecrest or University School.

Academically, the school is as good as you'll get in a public school. The keys here are that the parents are very active and the teachers and staff are excellent. Unfortunately, all public schools are subject to the FCAT program, which takes away greatly from curriculum in better schools such as these, and financially punishes teachers from schools where money is greatly needed This also ensures that a true Montessori environment cannot be realized, or even approached. Too bad. No child left behind also means no child allowed to completely flourish.

VSY is a fabulous magnet program offering a Montessori education for elementary school aged children. I am fortunate my daughter is able to attend and would pay for this education if it was a private school. The academic programs are of high quality and the children has a tremendous amount of school spirit and respect for their school. Like any public school there could always be more activities provided, especially the extra curricular ones but VSY does the best it can on a public school budget. The level of parent involvement is amazing and that is because parents are just so thrilled to have been able to get their kids in the school and they want it to be successful. If you can get your child in, you are one of the lucky ones.

Great school. Ranked as one of the best in the state and it really is. They do so many wonderful things for the student and for the family. It is the best school I have ever seen.

Our son was at VSY from 1-5. Montessori system with class size of 25 or so. Excellent academics and good FCAT scores. This is an 'A' school and is in a good neighborhood close to downtown. It is a magnet program and has a lottery system for admission. Sports are very limited with a small rec field but there is a good arts and music program. Parent involvement is very high and there are loads of PTA activities

As far as public schools go - this one seems to be one of the better. I can only comment on Pre K - K. The kids seem to be introduced new lessons regularly and the teacher parent communication is what you put into it. The biggest downfall to me is there is no second language being taught as a part of the curriculum except through limited song. They even discontinued the after school language program. I feel this is important to start at a young age.

My son has gone to VSY since he was 3 years old. VYS is a school where the children come first. Each child is encouraged to do their personal best without being labeled as the smart or dumb kids. The teachers are highly skilled and work hard to bring out the best in each child.

The teachers are fabulous and provide lots of individual attention to the students. My child has made so much progress in such a short time. My only complaint is with the administrative staff, whom find to be unpleasant to deal with.

The Best Montessori and the Best School in Broward. Parent involvement is amazing and the curriculum is the best. Great Principal.

Great school with so much to offer - especially extras in the areas of art, music, etc. BUT_ you must start out in 'the program' as early as possible ( Kindergarten is ideal). It is a very specific type of 'training' that is hard to adapt to if you are coming from another environment. However, it is a wonderful, enriching program that cannot compare with any other school in the Broward system. Tremendous parent involvement- came from another school in Broward- like night and day! Only negative- long bus ride and with mix age group ( akso mix of other schools so my very young children had an hour and a half bus ride that was sometimes opure tourture at the hands of some horrible six graders!)

Excellent teacher quality. They are a true montessori school.

great PTA, lots of successful school functions and fundraisers, kids are happy and well adjusted and have a love of learning, 23 day rotation of specials such as music, science, p.e.,art and media, and we love it.

This was my first year as a parent at VSY. The experience was very, very rewarding. The staff was great. My child's teacher was wonderful. Her learning experience was at a different lever, her whole disposition changed for the better. I volunteered at some of the school activities. I have nothing but praise for VSY and I have suggested to some friends that they should enroll their children in VSY for a better education.

The principal who took over last year is definitely a great improvement over the one before. However, my own experience has been that it is easier and more effective to speak with the vice-principal. My daughter's teacher has been somewhat thoughtless and rude with my daughter, on several occasions. However, my daughter's grades have not been seriously affected by her teacher's insensitivity. Her teacher makes negative comments about my daughter's clothing and appearance, because she can say nothing about my daughter's work ethic and grades. I am glad that my daughter is moving into middle school, next year. Other than this one teacher, though, I must say that my daughter has benefited tremendously, by studying in this school. I strongly recommend this school to any parent who is truly involved in his/her child's education.

This is a great school in almost every way. They meet the district standards and also have a great Montessori program. The principal and teachers all seem very committed to doing what is right for the children.

This is a great school with great teachers, a dynamic principal and involved parents. It has a wonderful Montessori program and a diverse student population.

Class size was a little bigger than I would have liked, however, teachers were all professional and the children are happy, motivated and excited about school.

This is a great school with caring staff and an involved parent group. They all work together to make education fun and meaningful for the kids. The principal seems committed to working with everyone and doing what is right for the school.

My child's experience at VSY has been just inimmitable. This is a great school and a wonderful learning environment. The best thing is, my child is learning not only for enjoyment, but she has also learned to respect the use of education in her daily life; she always claims that she needs school for everyting, including breathing! Accolades to every member of this particular village in helping in the construction of my perfect little citizen!

This is a really great school. I was very fortunate to have come across it by moving into the neighborhood. My daughter has come a long way and now her two siblings are also fortunate enough to get a great education for free! I have even moved way northwest & they is still able to attend through the magnet program.

Our family has been at VSY forGoing on 8 years. They have a wonderful PTA and always welcome help in the school as well as extracurricular activities. The quality of education has been excellent! This school best serves children who are self starters and who are motivated to jump ahead. For the child who is more unfocused the staff has a keen sense to target their strengths and bring other areas up to a higher level.

looking forward next year to less education time taken for teaching the FCAT - and more educating!

I have been very happy with my three children in this school because they are becoming responsible, and know how to work together harmoniously.
