Coral Gables Senior High School Reviews

My daughter graduated from Coral Gables Senior and i truly believe it to be a great school. It has its negatives but above all it is mostly good; staff and students get along well for the most part and it is a safe place to be.

This is still the best school in Miami !!! Excellent IB (International Baccalaureate) Program.

Excellent school with excellent magnet programs for advance/honor students. Excellent teachers. Do not go by the test scores, this is a 3, 500 students school. Such a big school and so many students it is hard to compete with the smaller nearby high schools. But, their program would definately prepare your child for the most challenging/competitive and pretigious universities.

The school lacks any administrative control of the curriculum. Each teacher teaches what he or she wants totally disregarding what they the assigned curriculum is. Some teachers are good other aren't. No administrator checks on them. All the administration seems to focus on is that the classes are under control by the teachers and the FCAT

As incoming PTSA President, I am very proud to be a Gables parent and have my children attend CGHS. My children range from ESE to Honors/AP classes and I find the teachers to be of the most excellent quality. Our principal is dedicated, driven, caring and involved. Gables is a GREAT school. Yes, we have an ethnically diverse large population, things are not perfect, but they are GOOD! Sports, extracurriculars, security, dresscode, it's all there. Our weakest area is Parent Involvement. Let me encourage any parent reading this to become involved at your school! The importance is beyond words. Go to your PTSA meetings. Learn what is going on. Go to parent nights. Read the school newspaper, the web site. Communication is there. Use it. At Gables, sign up for our Parent EMail list. Take time to find out. This is for your child, your school. Be there! IB/AP students carry the school academically. Until the overcrowding and infiltration from inferior neighboring school district regions stops the challenges may be too much for the new Principal. She is trying hard , focused and motivated to improve the overall school. Unfortunately, she spends her day trying to fight the fires presented by ESOL, unmotivated, under educated poverty family children and to some extent, ESE situations. The IB/AP students have funding drained to meet these other student's needs when the AP/IB funds should be made available to help make the average and better students students the best they can be.

I graduated in 2003. At the time, my average class size ranged from 30-35 students, and I was in the AP/IB program. The buildings were disgusting (sticky doors and floors, dead rats in the air vents), the students unmotivated, and the teachers uninterested. It seemed to be much more about baby-sitting, and keeping us quiet. There were a lot of 'movie days' when they weren't focusing on test scores. In my four years there, I saw a lot of general deterioration. I shudder to think of how it could be now. I hear I got out just in time.

I will be a senior in the IB program in this school and I hate it. The administration generally treats you like delinquents. I dread going here for another year. Spare your child if they actually want to learn.

This is a Great school. The IB programs and students are the best. Classes are fun and understanding. The after school activities and teachings are great. Yes, discipline is low, but its such a big school. Cant blame them. And the security is great. All the staff members are great and the school has Police all around its perimeter in case any troubles happen. This school is the best school to my oppinion. Now we are getting a new principle and uniforms. Things are shaping up great. I see no reason for any student not to go.

The IB program is a great thing but there are many problems withing the larger school context.

Poorly run, no discipline.

Good teachers but not good on security.

Coral Gables Sr. High is not what it once was. The school is overcrowded. This can not be fixed, no matter how many new buildings they bring. Yes, the IB program is great, in fact i graduated from it last spring. However the new coordinator is driving all the great teachers away. There is too much of a gap between the IB students and the rest of the crowd. The C will not be maintained for much longer, because IB is unable to carry the school anymore. It is getting to the point where all the teachers that care even a little bit about the program are going to leave to other schools, that offer IB as well, such as Reef or Carrolton. In my opinion, unless there is a drastic change in respects of the coordinator, who doent seem to have a clue about anything, the school will sink.

My son graduated from Coral Gables High last year. He had a good experience, although he had to work hard for it, because in a school that size you have to be motivated to seek out your own niche. The IB program was very good and there were several truly excellent teachers. There is a good band and an excellent chorus. On the negative side, the principal, while a great guy, has his hands full trying to improve the school's rating and hence is almost exclusively preoccupied with bringing up the strugglers and unable to spend much time on improving things for the abler students. I am looking for some alternatives to CGSHS for my next 2 kids but would think they could get a good education there as long as they seek it out.

My daughter is in 9th grade and loving it. She is in the IB program and Honor classes. So far she's excited with the class selection and happy with her teachers. She thinks and I see that her experience at CGHS will be a wonderful one and a very rich in quality education. She loves that teachers are expecting her to perform to her full capacity and that they are also giving their best to the children. I love when she comes home she is exited about all the World History she learned today, or the new French word.

CGHS is a great school and your children will get a great education from this school , I am very surprised with the great academics my child has recieved from cghs. The IB program tops it off...

CGSH is a great schoool as far as big populated high schools go in Miami. I mean Compared to schools of its proportions such as Miami High and Miami Springs, Coral Gables Senior High comes up high in after graduation oportunities and vocational programs as well as diciplinary and safety measures.

I think the magnet program is what brings the school up.

The school is a 'C'. I do not agree in spoonfeeding either but these are kids are begining H.S. in the 9th grade. Hardly H.S. material. If you expect them to take an incentive to do things on their own. They will and it may not be in their best interest or others.Go ask them what they want to do at their age. I don't think they will tell you 'be at school'. Uniforms in school should be mandatory and also extra activities after school to keep them busy and constantly learning to redirect their boldness into something positive for the community.

This is my child's first year at Gables. He is an ESE student with ADHD problem. So far, he is doing very well with his academics and elective courses. I think the teachers are great.

I would like to point out several errors on this page. First of all, Coral Gables does not cover grade 8, only grades 9 through 12. Also, despite the page's claims of an average class size of around 29 students, as a student currently enrolled at Gables I have never been in a class with less than 35 students, and more often it is closer to 40-45 students per class. While Gables does offer an impressive number of AP classes, the academic standing of the general level classes is quite poor, and many Honors level classes aren't much better.

I am an alumnus, having graduated in '96. Having been in the AP program, I had very good experiences. The best experiences came from several teachers (some migh still be there), and the chance to take classes I really wanted to take like AP Art and Drama. I live very close to the school, and have seen the changes. I'm a little dissapointed in it's C rating, and I think it has a lot to do with parental involvement, or the lack thereof. Being a teacher myself, I definitely see how the latter could make or break the success of a school.

I am an alumnae of this school and although the demographics have changed a lot I believe the school is still very good. I am disappointed that in the A+ plan it received a letter grade of C, but that could be the result of a number of factors, one of them being parental involvement and language being just two. The teachers were great back in 1983 and some of them are still there and still great. I am also a teacher, but not at Gables.

ths was my child's first year. the school is definitely overcrowded however I cannot criticize the education my child has received. I like the block schedule as it allows time for extracurricular activities and i like the different levels of classes available. I am disappointed in such low parental involvement and am leary of the renovation scheduled for next year. I am however satisfied with the school. they leave it up to the student to go as far as they want, they will not spoonfeed so your child must have initiative to be competitive.
